Equine Viral Arteritis
Equine Viral Arteritis (EVA) is an infectious viral disease found in horses. It causes a variety of clinical symptoms, most significantly abortions. The disease is transmitted through both the respiratory and reproductive systems. Many horses are either asymptomatic or exhibit flu-like symptoms for a short period of time. Mares and geldings usually shed the virus quickly, but stallions can carry it for an undetermined amount of time. (Mares depending on the stage of pregnancy, most often only show the symptom of abortion and may have a mild to severe respiratory infection.
This disease is not life-threatening to mature horses, however it can easily wipe out a breeding season. So for that reason, we are very serious about protecting our stock and our clients horses. Old Mill Farm’s Breeding stock are checked yearly.
